Key Principles of VLSI Design
Key Principles of VLSI Design
VLSI stands for very large-scale integration. VLSI is a process of developing an integrated circuit (IC) by combining numerous transistors into a single chip.
VLSI is a very widely used word in the global IT world. VLSI full form basically stands for very large-scale integration. The notion of VLSI design is a significant portion of technologies like semiconductors and communication. It is a unified set of circuits on a single chip and the microprocessor used inside is known as the VLSI device. To understand VLSI, it is imperative to get into the very basics of the electronics world. The electronics materials primarily and mostly deal with the circuits, and that is exactly how the initiation or the practice of VLSI began, with the creation of transistor.

VLSI concept got introduced to the world through the invention of the transistor in 1947. At first, the design process was a bit complicated. Gradually with time, the complexity in the design got reduced with upgrades that were used in the logic design of VLSI. Initially, several components were attached in a single chip but later the advancements brought by the engineers led to what we know today as VLSI. Nowadays VLSI is widely present almost everywhere, be it in computers, digital cameras, mobile phones, or any other type of portable device. The complex VLSI design flow has evolved over the years. Initially, the circuits used to get made from vacuum cleaners, and then gradually the whole process got shifted towards an integrated circuit. Integrated circuits are five types in nature which are as follows: a. Small scale integration, b. Medium-scale integration, c. Large scale integration, d. Very-large-scale integration, e. Ultra-large-scale integration.
There are mainly two types of circuit components, one is passive and the other one is active. The passive one does not provide any energy to signal and rather helps in increasing biases. On the other hand, the active elements aids in adding signals to the transistor. Due to the complexity in the structure, it is referred to as a ‘device’. VLSI devices are made of both active and passive elements.
Numerous tools are needed for VLSI design flow. The list of some of those Electronic Design Automation tools is as follows. 1. Synopsys, 2. Electric, 3. Alliance, 4. Tanner, 5. Glade. You may get access to these tools through license or might even find them through open source. The licensed ones are generally used for industrial settings, whereas the open-source software tools are used for learning purposes as they do not incur any kind of cost.
Global companies all around the world who have made it to the top list in terms of great performance and revenue in the VLSI technology are listed here. 1. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, 2. Toshiba, 3. Aricent, 4. Micron Technology, 5. Infosys.
